- Although I have been programming for simply ages in one language or
- another, and have even produced code to help me in my 'real job' that is
- still being used years after I have moved on, I have never had the
- opportunity to charge market rates for my work.
-
- At last, a company is considering commissioning three applications from
- me, and is prepared to pay a reasonable sum for my work.
-
- The work consists of a Microsoft Access 2.0 database (the relatively
- easy bit) and software to enable manipulation of that database through a
- visual interface similar to the paper and pencil method currently used.
- I would be using MS Visual C++ 1.52 to do the work, since the companies
- PCs all run Windows 3.11, and that is the package I happen to know best.
-
- The software would probably be used in 9 different offices on a total of
- about 25 PCs by something approaching 130 staff.
-
- How much cash should I ask for, and on what basis should it be paid? I
- am British, so I will ask for an amount in UK pounds sterling, but I am
- quite capable of dividing by 1.5 to convert from US dollars, and other
- currencies shouln't be too much trouble either.
-
- While I'm asking, is there anything else I should be careful of?
- Obviously, I am determined to get a written specification of the work
- before I start, since I am fully aware of how far (and how much further
- away) goalposts tend to move in this kind of project.
-
- If people wish to contact me privately (if they don't wish to publically
- state how much they charge, for example) I will post an unattributed
- summary of any useful info that comes my way.
-
- Thanks in advance for your help.
